“How similar are we in the end.”
Tehdas Teatteri dives once again into the uncharted waters of theater art! The performance Toiset kaltaiset (Kindred Machines) focuses on the hidden technological world of theater. Now, the machines take the stage!
Toiset kaltaiset creeps into the dimness of the stage and looks around. At the edges of the stage strange devices and machines lurk in the shadows, while somewhere on the verge of the light, machine operators hover—focused, serious.
Toiset kaltaiset passionately celebrates the bizarre connection between the living and the non-living. Devices fill the stage with artificial natural forces. Bright searchlights sweep over the space. The sky rumbles. Small motors scurry across the stage, giggling. Others tune into the party. A thick fog hides everything from view – until a storm wind reveals the technological world in all its arrogance.
Toiset kaltaiset is a fascinating, strange, self-contained world the size of the stage, inhabited by machines. In this world all the theater’s technical equipment / machines gradually turn(s) on and off / are powering on / off, from moment to moment, day to day, carrying out its own operations, creating oddly familiar encounters, almost like its own rituals. These rituals evolve constantly, have their own life, following the logic of machines, but eerily often resembling that of humans.
Machines surround modern humans everywhere. They enable unprecedented things, while also increasingly defining how we spend our waking hours. We use more and more gadgets in our daily life, they communicate autonomously with each other, algorithms decide our search results on the internet, machine learning flourishes, and artificial intelligence is on the way. The machine is always here, beside us, listening, walking with us, as a companion, as a friend.

Please Note: The performance contains an extraordinary amount of theatrical smoke, flashing and intense lights, and sounds such as the intense buzzing of electricity. Because of these effects, we do not recommend the show for members of the audience who are sensitive to strong sounds and lights.
Toiset kaltaiset curiously approaches how much machines define the way we create art, do things, and exist. This rare journey into the electric boundaries of theater, puppet theater, and performance art is offered by the innovators of Turku’s theater art: lighting designer Jarkko Forsman and sound designer/director Antti-Juhani Manninen.
15.11. after the performance, at around 20:00, there will be a free talk Taistelu ihmisestä in the lobby of Tehdas Theater.
