TEHDAS Teatteri: Baby Judo

Baby Judo is a contemporary theatre piece that draws from physical expression and movement in a cross between performance art, dance, puppetry and material theatre. The different art forms act as frames, or lenses, through which they can be re-exposed, re-understood and interact with each other. As an outcome is a theatre piece delivered that does not occupy directly the territories of the familiar art forms, but carves out its own tiny place in reality.

The most significant material in Baby Judo is the physicalities, presences and personal histories of the actual human bodies performing on stage and sitting in the shadows of the audience. The experience of the limitations of our skills unites us all – regardless of appearances and identities. We are always like babies learning judo.

The working group consists of acknowledged artists from various fields of art and they have drawn inspiration from judo for toddlers. It is a combination of learning new skills, following rules and politeness, the absurdity of being human and the absurdity of sports, the mixing of play and game, and the concept of the domesticated human being, Homo Puppy.

Baby Judo invites you to join, to enjoy, to spend time together, as if wandering around in a random museum, ending up in front of an art object, and asks what can performance be as an object, as something to contemplate in front of and be inspired by? What is left of the performance when the curtain closes? Is the spectator the most important thing that remains?

Creepily funny, jerky and unique, Baby Judo floats absurdly on the border between a performance piece and an art object, like a plastic swimming ring pumped full by coppery biceps, forgotten in the azure waters of Ibiza.

The water is warm. The water is soft.
