Freely Inspired by the worlds of Adolfo Bioy Casares‘ novel The Invention of Morel and by Alain Resnais‘ motion picture Last Year at Marienbad, artist Isa Balog has created an intimate theatre floating in an atmosphere of magical realism.
Anamorphic Memories is an immersive play, for one spectator, at the border between theater and multimedia installation. Isa Balog invites us to experience with her an intimate face to face where the boundaries between fiction and reality gradually blur. In a device where real presences and optical illusions intermingle, she deploys technologies to better play with our perceptions. By using various types of media technologies, the mystical space of a camera obscura, the transparencies and reflections of mirrors and the trick of lights, Anamorphic Memories offers the spectator a moment in and beyond time that will bedazzle the senses and stir empathy, ultimately leading them to both a cathartic and a beautifully fleeting experience.
Isa Balog’s project is abstract and profound, intense and bewildering. It hints at the deconstruction of the individual in his constituent parts, such as appearance, voice, feelings, memory, but obviously detached from the physical body that supports them. A moment, both in and out of time, where the fleeting beauty of an encounter as unsettling as it is strangely familiar is played out. BIO “My artistic research focuses on the infinite possibilities of interpreting reality. Through the use of different media – each of which has given rise to this fantasy at different times – I question the human desire to “fix” an objective impression of a space and a moment. After graduating from Art school I turned to more hybrid formats, at the crossroads of disciplines. In “Walk inside the box/think outside”, for example, a project combining video, drawing and dance techniques, the body of a dancer left behind a “drawn” trace of her journey. A memory trace, uncertain and unfaithful to the original movement, clearly distinct from the reality of the movement produced.”
