When Mr. Shadow sneezes funny things happen – sometimes when he sneezes he turns into a cow or a giraffe or a fast flowing river!
The performances combines minimalistic visuals to electronic music, kazoo, shaker and other sound effects. The show is based on the idea of a poem “My Shadow” by Robert Louis Stevenson.
Drew Colby has played and worked with puppets since the age of five years old, becoming more interested in ephemeral forms of puppetry as his career developed, until he began specialising in the ancient art of hand shadows in 2010. Mainly self-taught, his work has toured to theatres and venues on five continents, and has been seen on television in programmes such as Not Going Out (BBC), 8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown (C4) and Trust (BBC). His shows have won awards including the 2018 Phoenix Arts Club cabaret award on the West End in London and the audience choice award for Best Show at the 2019 Newcastle Puppetry Festival.
“Here is a performer at the top of his game, who has a fertile imagination and meticulously crafted technique. He seems to have more than two hands as he creates birds which morph into swans which become something entirely new. He uses cartoon gags, like big animals eating little ones, then the little ones escaping via a colourful regurgitation – which the children love. He never stays in one story context for long, switching – as children so often do when they play – from one story to the next with no need for a logical link.” – Pamela Hall, The Croydon Citizen
